March 14, 2024 | 18:00 – Coincidences and successful failures: ergot and the discovery of the chemistry of the mind
More Information

The "Antonius fire" was a mass poisoning that affected people well into modern times. The cause of this serious illness, which often led to the death of entire limbs, seizures and hallucinations, was the ergot fungus or red mace.

Over the course of two evenings, we will shed light on the unique history of the effects of the red mace head. Starting with St Anthony's fire, the winding path to modern medicine will be illuminated. The scientific investigation of the mushroom's ingredients not only marked the beginning of innovation-driven drug research in Basel. The resulting LSD contributed significantly to the discovery of the chemistry of the mind.
